Your First Line of Defense from Cavities and Gum Disease
Brushing and flossing are essential to keeping your teeth and gums healthy. They’re the first line of defense against dental issues like cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. By brushing and flossing regularly, you:
Remove plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth
Prevent the buildup of tartar, which can lead to decay and gum problems
Keep your teeth clean and your smile bright
Help avoid costly treatments down the road
Brushing and flossing are simple, daily habits that significantly affect your oral health!
Cavities (Tooth Decay)
Plaque builds up on your teeth, especially around the gumline. If not cleaned off, plaque produces acids that attack tooth enamel, leading to cavities. Brushing removes plaque, while flossing helps clean between teeth, where a toothbrush can’t reach.
Gum Disease (Gingivitis and Periodontitis)
Your teeth are not the only important part of your mouth. Your gums are essential to oral hygiene as well. We can provide periodontal cleanings and treatment. Brushing and flossing regularly keeps your gums free from plaque and tartar, preventing gum recession, tooth loss, and more severe forms of gum disease. Plaque can irritate and inflame your gums. If left untreated, it hardens into tartar, which can cause gum infection and disease.
Brushing
Brush your teeth at least twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed. Brushing after meals is also ideal but not always possible.
While both traditional toothbrushes and electric toothbrushes are effective, electric toothbrushes often provide a more thorough cleaning with less effort. Dr. Afifi recommends an electric toothbrush because:
Automatic brushing with built-in motion makes it easier to get the right amount of pressure and coverage
Studies show electric brushes remove more plaque and may reduce the risk of gum disease
It is ideal for people with limited dexterity or those who want more efficient cleaning
Brushing Tips
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Apply a pea-sized amount.
Angle the brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and gently move the brush in small circles (not back and forth).
Brush for two minutes, making sure to cover all tooth surfaces—front, back, and chewing surfaces. Don't forget your tongue!
Replace your toothbrush (or electric toothbrush head) every three to four months or sooner if the bristles fray.
Flossing
Floss at least once a day, preferably before bed. Flossing helps remove food particles and plaque that get stuck between your teeth and can’t be reached by a toothbrush.
Flossing Tips
Use about 18 inches of floss. Wrap most of it around your middle fingers, leaving an inch or two to work with.
Gently slide the floss between your teeth, curving it into a C-shape around each tooth. Be sure to floss below the gumline.
Use a clean section of floss for each tooth to avoid pushing bacteria around.
If flossing is hard to do, try floss picks or a water flosser for an easier alternative.
Brushing and flossing work together to remove plaque and food debris, ensuring a healthier smile! If you have questions about your oral health or home care routine, ask your hygienist during your next visit to our Chino dental office.
